Co-OP Experience

Yesterday, Tuesday, was our first community service project. We went to the CO-OP, which is an organization that provides food for families who are homeless or in transition. It was a real eye opener because these people wer thankful for this 1 box of food every other week. I know my brother and I get mad when we don't get what we want from the grocery store every week. When I walked downstairs and into the room, I could feel the love and support in the atmosphere. Everyone was like a big, loving family. What I found most interesting was the fact that most people didn't just come down to the church for food, they also came to the church for the love from one another. The most touching stories that I heard were about the man who had 11 kids, once had 12, but lost one, who was actually a member in the CO-OP. He came down the church just because of the loving atmosphere and he likes to be around people who are nice to him. The other story that I heard that touched me was the one about the woman who had cancer and how everyone in the CO-OP took her the hospital, the grocery store, and anywhere she needed to go. The lesson that I learned from this experience was to be thankful for what I have because I could have been worse off. (Side note- the 2 quotes that I thought wrapped up the day were: "Everyone is rich: Some with money; others in life."
"Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I might remember, Involve me and I will understand."

yes, I do agree with ou Freedom. The Co-Op was deffinatly my favorite voulunteer project up to this point in the Youth Summit. Heaing from the people who were involved in the Co-Op was very inspiring and uplifting. Hearing that they've once fell but found it in there heart to get back up and put the peices of there life back together such as the man with 12 kids and the lady with cancer.
