Monday June 1.
It was the only the 2nd week of summer and couldn't believe that my day had already started at 6:00 in the morning. The morning up until 8:30 that day was a blur. But the minute I walked into the room at the Food Bank, everything suddenly became clear.
In the three days that followed the first initial gathering, my eyes have been opened. I'm seeing things in ways I never have had before. I was ignorant before- having my predisposed ideas of poverty and hunger. I now feel shocked that I was so shallow. The people that I have met are some of the most courageous and honorable people alive. Their life story is a testament of faith, hope, and vision for a changed world. Their strength in the face of adversity and desolation has inspired me. Their open arms and their warm smiles ignited a flame within me. And this flame will not go out until I have had my chance to make my impact on the world and these people.
I applaud the volunteers who give up parts of their day routinely to make a difference. This difference shows in the appreciative co-op members at Georgia Avenue and the grateful "customers" at Cafe 458. They're the "behind the scenes" guys, but they are the real stars to me.
I also would like to applaud my new family. The 20 individuals that I have been spending my week with have brought me so much joy. It's only been 3 days but you all have already left your footprints with me. I've been hooked and can't let go. I'm part of the family. For this I am thankful and cannot wait to see what the rest of this week brings.
