2nd Day

Today as soon as we got there we went to Georgia Avenue Cooperative Ministry. It is a non-profit that not only gives families food every week but gives them a community. Every family has to pay $3 to get into the co-op, but if you can’t you can just work more for them, or something else. Then every two weeks there are meetings and the members of the co-op (there are 50 families in each co-op and there are five co-ops) run the meetings. At the meetings they unload all of the food, which comes from the food bank, and they sort it all. Each family takes a box of food home, there are different sizes depending on the family. We helped them unload and sort their food. Then they had their meeting and it was mostly praying. It was amazing to see how grateful they all were when they really didn’t have that much. It made me all the more grateful for what I have.

After that we went to VOX which is a teen run newspaper where high schoolers can write all sorts of stories and such and get it published in the newspaper if they decide to become a writer for it. When we went there we learned about teen activism. First we did some ice breakers and they were pretty fun. Then we read a story that a teenager on the VOX newspaper wrote and it was about how he was homeless for a few years and how it was a big struggle for him. It was a great story but it made me feel really sad to know that another high schooler had gone through so much pain and hardship in their life at such a young age. Then we all wrote a small, 10 minute, piece about how to stop world hunger and poverty. Afterwards we split up into groups and my group went to blogging. We each choose an article on the May blog and wrote a comment about it. Mine was a very touching article about bullying and how it needs to stop. Then after this we left and went back to the food bank.

When we got back to the food bank we split up into groups and had to start planning a meal based on the ingredients we had on our table. WE came up with all sorts of things without having a wide variety of food. Then we all discussed what our groups came up with and what we actually wanted to put on the menu for what we are cooking on Friday. Then each team chose three of the dishes that everyone decided they liked. My team is making some kind of bread, pan fried noodles with egg, and peach cobbler. It should be fun! After we finished that it was time to go.
